After my month of color, I decided to dedicate this past week of my project 365 to black and white.

Mondaythe straight lines. I observed the beauty of these lines on the highway. It was Independence Day and we were searching the outskirts of the city for fireworks. Alas, a ban was in place on account of the drought. Boo.
Tuesdaythe kid in the pool. Evening– it’s the only time the sun isn’t plotting to kill us.
Wednesdaythe life of a kiddo. Andrew completely gave up the opportunity to nap and instead jumped on my bed trying to do somersaults. He failed.
Thursdaythe zinnia bouquet. While the boys tried to trap ants in circles of chalk, I picked these zinnias. most of them were on their last breath and the stems had already put out more stems, so I should see a few more blooms soon.
Fridaythe remote photographer. Andrew likes snapping photos of himself. I have to chase him in the viewfinder, as he often leaves the frame.

Picture Color is over! Big sigh. I loved it a lot. I liked getting prompts in the mornings and thinking about them throughout the day until I reached that “Aha!” moment and knew exactly what I wanted to photograph. Some days I’d get a prompt that would be perfect for a photo I photographed a day or two before and that always made me feel good. Like I’d somehow GOTTEN it. I understood the project and I was taking the photos subconsciously.

I totally recommend “classes” like this for folks who are needing some inspiration. It has helped me to want to pick up my camera everyday and seek out those special moments instead of waiting for them to half-pass. I don’t want to be late anymore!

Oh, sleep.

bed2

For the past 2 and a half years or so, we’ve had our mattress directly on the floor. We gave up our bed frame during co-sleeping because I was paranoid the baby would roll out, even with a side rail.

A few months ago, I pulled out the old crib mattress (I’m talking like SIX year old crib mattress we got for our first baby shower w/Nathan and hardly used because HE co-slept too) and decided to start transitioning Andrew into his own bed. Since then, he’s been sleeping right next to me, but in his own bed. I KNEW he could sleep on his own, as evident by his nights over at grandma’s house or how once he’s out, HE.IS.OUT and it really doesn’t/didn’t matter if we moved him.

SOOOO, we made the decision to start putting him to bed in Nathan’s room. Once and for all having a child-free bedroom. Oh, the freedom!

Last week, the husband and I finally decided to take the plunge and buy a new bed. Holy expense, Batman! We selected one that we felt was most comfortable in the showroom, though that was tough. I mean, come on! Our mattress that has been on the floor and jumped on a bajillion times in the past few years was NOTHING compared the comfort we felt that day. Imagine us going, “this one! No…this one!” about seven different times and finally selecting one. I don’t even know the brand and I DON’T CARE.

This baby is comfortable. Times infinity. I laid on it and fell asleep within a few minutes. I was woken up by an Andrew in my face telling me it wasn’t sleepy time yet.

Wellll, it’s almost midnight, and I think it definitely IS sleepy time, now.

Retrospective: Nathan

I celebrated six whole years of motherhood, yesterday. Six years of life for my son, Nathan. It was also his last day of kindergarten!

He wanted to go bowling, so we went to a little alley a few blocks away. We were starving when we finished, so we stopped at a favorite restaurant of his for dinner. They sang to him (his face was adorable when they showed up and burst into song) and gave him a free sundae! After he was done eating it, he made a request that we make this a birthday tradition for the rest of his life. That’s right, ladies…to win his heart, just give him some ice cream topped with fudge, whipped cream, sprinkles, and a maraschino cherry. He’ll be forever yours.

Let’s look back. A photo from every year of his life–

And now, he is SIX.

Our first day of summer vacation is going smoothly. He has a workbook to help keep his brain from shutting down and I’m starting a chore routine of cleaning in the mornings.

Plans for the rest of the summer include: not dying from heat, planting the rest of the tomato plants, taking a Metro ride to a museum or two (& to try out the Metro Rail!), working on our reading skills, getting Andrew to learn his ABC’s, and eating lots & lots of frozen popsicles!

Restyle: lamp shade

restyle: lamp shade

From ordinary black lamp shade to lovely needlepoint-inspired shade. I found a set of 4 hankies that had this faux-cross-stitch all over, at Goodwill last week. I made a rice pack using half of one and used a whole one for this.

While I was doing my own embroidery by this very lamp, I thought about how BLAH the black lamp shade was. I thought about the fabrics I had in my closet and nothing really struck me with inspiration, until I reached this one.

I ripped all the fabric off and was left with a white plastic covered frame. It was still slightly sticky from the original fabric, so I smoothed it out and used double-sided tape at the seam. I hot-glued quilt-binding along the edges to finish it off.

Can we talk about how sweet this glow is?
