Around the house: Simple Statement Wreath

looking grown

The simple statement wreath has found a home on a bedroom in my wall. I’m always changing the wall above my bed. I hope to find a semi-permanent decoration for that space one day. For now, though, the wreath looks spectacular. I made another one (green!) and it’s above my green couch. They’re different shades of green, so they complement each other well.

I realized a while ago that you can spot the wreaths in some of my photos. The one above was taken yesterday. My Andrew is looking grown up! He sorta-kinda needs a haircut, as he’s constantly pushing it out of his eyes, but I’m waiting for him to lead us. We were close a few weeks ago (grandma got her scissors out!), but he changed his mind at the last minute. I’m letting him decide because the last thing I want is a squirmy screaming child close to sharp scissors. We’ll probably head to a professional and while I’m sure they’re used to scared kids, I don’t want to be a burden on them. So, we wait.

Taking photos of a blanket I was working on and I ended up with a wreath in the background of both!

Have you made a wreath using my tutorial? You should add it to the Ravelry page (click below)!

Just a few spots in my home that make me happy.

We’ve lived in this house a little over a year now. It’s a work in progress. I find myself “completing” parts of rooms instead of entire rooms. I seem to move on before finishing them up. I either get bored with a room or I get inspired with another part of my house. I’m going to go with the latter!

Oh, sleep.

For the past 2 and a half years or so, we’ve had our mattress directly on the floor. We gave up our bed frame during co-sleeping because I was paranoid the baby would roll out, even with a side rail.

A few months ago, I pulled out the old crib mattress (I’m talking like SIX year old crib mattress we got for our first baby shower w/Nathan and hardly used because HE co-slept too) and decided to start transitioning Andrew into his own bed. Since then, he’s been sleeping right next to me, but in his own bed. I KNEW he could sleep on his own, as evident by his nights over at grandma’s house or how once he’s out, HE.IS.OUT and it really doesn’t/didn’t matter if we moved him.

SOOOO, we made the decision to start putting him to bed in Nathan’s room. Once and for all having a child-free bedroom. Oh, the freedom!

Last week, the husband and I finally decided to take the plunge and buy a new bed. Holy expense, Batman! We selected one that we felt was most comfortable in the showroom, though that was tough. I mean, come on! Our mattress that has been on the floor and jumped on a bajillion times in the past few years was NOTHING compared the comfort we felt that day. Imagine us going, “this one! No…this one!” about seven different times and finally selecting one. I don’t even know the brand and I DON’T CARE.

This baby is comfortable. Times infinity. I laid on it and fell asleep within a few minutes. I was woken up by an Andrew in my face telling me it wasn’t sleepy time yet.

Wellll, it’s almost midnight, and I think it definitely IS sleepy time, now.

The Cafe Curtains

I put up a curtain rod over one of the windows in my breakfast room, about 9 months ago. It took me that long to make curtains. That’s about how long it takes to make a baby! After putting it up, I had to decide on a fabric. I chose one and then hated it. Fast forward a few months and I win a Waverly Fabric giveaway on sfgirlbybay!

When I received the fabric, I was in awe. My creative mind kind of just froze and the box sat next to my knitting basket since then. I would sneak peeks and wonder if I should make a pillow, an apron, or perhaps some sort of magical quilt. It wasn’t until a few days ago, when I was standing in this room thinking about how I “wished I had made those curtains before the birthday party” (this Saturday), that I realized this fabric would be PERFECT!

I sewed them up, yesterday evening. The boys went to Grandma’s for a day of fun in the sun (and crawfish. ick) and I stayed behind to clean their room (it was HORRIBLE but now is LOVELY). I made 2 simple rectangles out of one yard of this print and hung them up with a rod and clips from Ikea. They came out the perfect cafe-style length.

I think I might pick up some bamboo valances for the top and get rid of the blinds.

Boy, oh, boy. This is some beautiful fabric. I am in love with this room, now. I just need to score the perfect chairs and I’d be all set! Next up in my sewing queue: a valance for my kitchen to replace the ugly dingy one that came with the house. Can you guess what fabric I’ll be using for that??

It starts with a Wave and ends with an -erly. :)
