Small Style: Nathan 03

MAN, IT’S HOT. Ok. Broken record, I know, but good golly I am SOOOO ready for Autumn. We put our swing-set way back here, between the only 2 trees in the whole backyard. It’s on an easement, so maybe one day the city will need to dig it up, but the swings would not get used if they were out in the sun. No way.

Nathan got a new pair of shoes, today. They’re supposed to be for school, but he likes them so much and I would totally suck if I made him stare at them everyday for the next 3ish weeks before letting him wear them. Who cares if his shoes aren’t brand-spankin’ new on the first day? Not us. He chose these Simple Carport Sneakers because they look like his jacket, but guess what! The uppers are made with 55% recycled wool taken from thrift store coats! AND the bottoms are made from recycled tires. His greatest love is cars, so that fact kind of thrills him. “My shoes are made from CARS.” Yeah. Hello, dream shoes.

Small Style: Nathan 02

I am back with a Small Style featuring Nathan! You might remember his last post, here. In this outfit, he brings back the vest. He loves that vest!

We’re also introducing a jacket we found at our favorite thrift shop for $2.50! I spotted it and KNEW he would love it. When he saw me walking to the register with it (where he was waiting with daddy), he LIT.UP. It was SO CUTE. He loved it. It’s his size, but the sleeves are short! He said he didn’t care.

shirt: Old Navy (gift from husband’s co-worker)
vest & jacket: thrifted
pants: Levi’s
shoes: magenta Chuck Taylor Converse (gift from one of my cousins)
sunglasses: thrifted (he’s allowed to get one thing and that day, he loved these glasses. haha)

I’m going to be super bummed when he starts school again and has to wear his boring uniform every day. Booo.

Summertime: build a tent inside!

the tent face

I’m completely in love with the idea of putting up a little tent in the grass for my kiddos to sit under and read or play cars. However, with the weather as hot as it has been, there’s just no way. SO, what to do? Build one on your bed! I hung a string across the room and draped a sheet over it. Bam! Done. Nathan thought it was awesome.

Have any stay-cool ideas that don’t involve the pool? I’ve had ear problems for a whole week because of the blasted pool! I’m a bit jaded, so daddy gets put on pool duty when he gets home work.

It’s been a few weeks since I made one of these. It’s been pretty hot, so my kids are usually in underwear and a t-shirt until it’s pool time and then it’s just swim trunks. Wash, rinse, repeat. I wanted to document this outfit, though. We were on our way to the grocery store, so he had to be clothed.

Notice how nothing matches! I love that kids can pull this off. I will be sad when e cares what colors/patterns match with which.

My favorite June photo (+Summer Haze tip)

175.365: the dreamboat

This might actually be my favorite photo of Andrew. I’ve been waiting for it to happen–to capture a photo of him that makes me swoon and declare it my favorite. I already have one of Nathan and we’ve already committed that one to canvas. Now, when the time is right (money!) we can do the same for this one.

Did you try out my Photoshop action, Summer Haze? I edited this photo with that and I have a little tip. If your photos come out slightly too cool, you can add a “Photo Filter” adjustment layer to slightly warm it back up.

In the layers palette, just click on the little black and white circle, select “Photo Filter,” and a little dialog box will pop up. I select a color filter set to #ec6f00 and 25% density (preserve luminosity). I set that layer to 50% opacity. I find that it makes my whites warm up a bit. The purpose of the action was to make my yellows more soft, so it sometimes cools down the whole photo. This brings some of it back.

If you’ve used the action, can you let me know what you think? I saw a beautiful set of images on Flickr that used it and was happy to see it utilized well!
