Knitting: vintage stitch

nameless

I found this stitch in a vintage knitting leaflet. It’s mainly PURL. The pattern was a whole sweater made of it! Gah! To be fair, though, the sweater was flat, so some rows were knit. I did some tweaking to make it work in the round and after a few days (hand cramps slowed me down, down, down), I have a hat!

Does anyone know of any modern name for this stitch? It looks similar to smocking, but there isn’t any wrapping. You basically slip stitches for 3 rows, then after working 3 additional rows, you make a knit at the center of the slipped stitches and then pass the loose loops over. It’s super easy!

yarn: Madelinetosh Tosh DK in ‘candlewick’

  • I don’t knit so I have no clue…however, this is beautiful. I love the color and the design!

Thank you! It definitely is some sort of honeycomb pattern. This one utilizes a 6-stitch repeat. I’ll get the pattern together for folks to try it out. I liked knitting with the DK weight yarn!

  • It’s so pretty. I will email a link of your post to my Auntie. She is a master knitter (literally) and might just know the name for this.

  • Is it a twist stitch latice?

I have Barbara Walker’s treasury and that looks pretty close.

Thanks for the info! There are no twisted stitches. There are slipped stitches, though. It’s most similar to the drop-stitch honeycomb mentioned above.

  • The stitch looks like one called ‘diamond brocade’ in a giant book of stitches I have, though it’s not a perfect match.

Beautiful hat, and the colour of the yarn suits the pattern very well :) And I only recently found your blog and thought it was great, so hello!

Hello! Thank you for coming back. :)

I think it’s most similar to the drop-stitch honeycomb, but it’s more of a slip-stitch honeycomb.

  • I don’t know anything about it, but it looks gorgeous. Especially as a hat! As a sweater, it would be kind of – too much for me… And the COLOR… :)

I love your new hat! I am lusting after anything mustard at the moment as it is the perfect autumn colour – it goes with navy, olive green, chocolate brown… Nice job! Sam xox
