That boy right there has found his courage. He tried to climb anything with a rung for him to hang on to. Ladders, slides, jungle gyms, etc. When he couldn’t quite climb the jungle gym (blame the short arms and legs), he started eating it…
He was trying to climb it to get to daddy, who was perched up top. It was a pretty big domey jungle gym. Not even the big one could get up on his own.
Speaking of the big one; he’s turning five, this June. FIVE! I thought the day would never come. All those long nights I wished he would just grow up already! and now he’s turning FIVE and I want him to be tiny again. He’s sassy and talks back. His hair is always a mess. His room is always a mess. He says big words and he scolds ME when I interrupt him.
But.
He’s also smart. He tells ridiculous jokes and dances like a crazy-person. He lets me win card games and take his picture. He was the first.

I may be giving away a big thrifty secret. Or I may be preaching to the Houston thrift-store-surfin’ choir. Either way, I’ll say it. My favorite thrift store is a tiny little shop called SeAM. It stands for Southeast Area Ministries. Their shop is located in South Houston and almost every other weekend, the whole place is 50% off. There’s one thing I’ve JUST learned, despite visiting the place every couple of Saturdays (they’re closed on Sundays and are only open til 4 the rest of the week): GET THERE EARLY!
Saturday being our prime thrifting day, because Jason isn’t working, there’s no school, and no big family shindigs (those are reserved for Sundays), we usually end up saving SeAM for last. Well, today, we had an appointment to view a house at 10am, so we stopped by the store on our way home. It was packed with stuff! I found the above thread in a bag for $4. But wait! Today was one of the “50% off entire store” days, so it was only $2! Score! Then, I found a brand-new pack of cotton batting for $2 $1! And an embroidery hoop and some cotton fabric for under a buck. It was pretty rad.
That said, if you’re in the Houston area, you should totally stop by this store. Some days the pickings are bleak, but others…well, others are awesome. Some of my finds include these, this, this garland, and this amazing granny square blanket. And they sometimes have pretty vintage furniture. I never get to get any because….well, we lack the space, at the moment. Or sometimes it’s sold. So, GET THERE EARLY!

p.s. Some of the thread was actually tangled together in a bag. I was able to take it apart without having to snip any of it. In order to store it, I busted out the rubber bands. The ends don’t move, now! They’re happily sitting in a big ziploc bag, but I’m open to suggestions on how to store them! They’re so pretty, I’d like to have them in plain sight. Kind of like this thread.

Ugh. Don’t you just wish you could scratch and sniff your monitor, right now? My mom recently bought a rose bush and they started opening up and smell absolutely divine! You can see more photos on my flickr stream.
They’ve inspired me to make some new brooches for the shop. I’m using a few different colors of yarn and will be choosing some white/shelly/pearly buttons for the centers. I got a lot of them in my jar of vintage buttons from the antique store. They’re some of my favorites and thus have been separated into their own special jar.

The cupcake of the month (and maybe the year..) is Chocolate and Chilli! Again, I got the recipe from 500 Cupcakes. The batter was pretty hot and I was a little worried. Then, I ate a warm cupcake and it was kind of amazing. THEN, I made the frosting (!!) and oh my God! It was DELICIOUS! Like, all the flavors melted together and kindly left me ugghhhmmming in the kitchen for a few minutes. Yeah, I ate two cupcakes today. SUE ME!
The frosting calls for Tia Maria, a coffee liqueur. I’m sure you can find it in any liquor store, but we used it as a reason to go to our favorite liquor/specialty foods & cheeses store, Spec’s. We visit the downtown Houston location, which is a pretty big warehouse with endless amounts of beer, wine, liquor, gourmet foods, cheeses, and an awesome deli ($2.50 po-boys! get ’em! they’re amazinggg). It was pricey, but I think it’s worth it. Same goes for the dutch-process cocoa and chipotle chilli powder. These are probably the priciest homemade cupcakes I’ve ever made! But. Seriously, guys. I wish I could email them to everyone I know because I think I’m going to marry it. They were that good.
I want to share the recipe, but that might be illegal, since it’s from a book. You should probably buy it, anyway. It’s cheap and there are 500 variations of cupcakes in it. A cupcake book! Everyone loves cupcakes.
