Retrospective: Andrew

andrew is here

Three years ago, I experienced the most amazing birth and welcomed my little Andrew to the world with the sun shining on my face and the concrete rubbing my knees. He hardly cried and nursed like a champ (he gained a whole pound PER WEEK for 12 weeks). He pretty much ruled.

Then, he turned 1…

He's two.

Tomorrow, he turns 3. Sometimes, though, he looks 13.

I put up streamers (he’s wearing part of one!) and will make him a cake tomorrow morning. Party next weekend! Weeeee!

on spring cleaning and BIRTHDAYS!

diptych: spring evening

Why does this time of year always seem to sneak up on me? My littlest turns 3 on Friday and then almost 2 weeks later, my oldest turns 6. You know what that means–CRUNCH TIME for party planning. The party will be smack dab in the middle of both birthdays. At what age do you think they’ll start hating me for forcing them to share a birthday party?

It will be the first time my son invites kiddos from his school to a party. His last day of Kindergarten falls ON HIS BIRTHDAY! So…we’re all pretty excited. The RSVP is now a lost art form, so I’m actually flying in the dark when it comes to preparing for the kids that show up. I’m going to be making extra everything and if NO ONE shows (oh gosh..) then I’m taking the party to THEM on that last day. Basically, WE WILL PARTY.

I’m spending the next week and a half-ish getting my house in order. I figured I should make a list of all the rooms that need to be cleaned/decorated/whatever and then check them off day by day. I can tackle one room a day, right? That’s totally reasonable! Kind of sad, but there are some rooms in our home that have yet to be really decorated properly. I just hope that once I get a room in order no one messes it up before the party. I’m going to have to be on high alert til then.

Wish me luck! I’m going to need it on the day I have to clean the boys’ room. GAHJFKLAJFLFKDJ! THE HORROR!

Freshly picked

132.365: fresh pick

I picked the first cucumber off my plant, today! I’m so excited to slice it up! I’m a little weary it will be the best tasting cucumber, because I just thought I should leave it on the vine to get super huge. After a bit of research on harvesting them, I learned you can harvest them early (i.e. small), but harvesting them late can lead to hard seeds and bitter cucumbers. Eeeek! This one isn’t too yellow, but I’m kind of nervous. EITHER WAY, I’m super pumped about my plants actually producing fruit for us. I can’t wait to harvest more!

Feliz dia de las Madres!

I’ll be spending it with these dudes:

127.365: the one who started it all

the bestest

Nathan woke me up before 8 by throwing his card at me and yelling, “Happy Mother’s day!” I got up and made a quiche and sliced some strawberries. We’ll be visiting my MIL later this afternoon for dinner & dessert (I’m making a lemon berry trifle complete with homemade lemon curd! yum).

Have a good one!

The baby gets a silhouette!

This weekend, I finally set about making a painted fabric silhouette for Andrew. I made Nathan’s in late April 2008. He was almost 3. Considering Andrew is that same age, I thought I should get on the ball and make his.

I hung it up, yesterday:

93.365: we will become silhouettes

I used the same method I used to make the other: I stretched some fabric over a 12×12 canvas and stapled it on the back. Then, I printed the silhouette onto freezer paper, cut it out, and ironed it onto my fabric. I used acrylic paint and foam brush to paint around the stencil. Let it dry a bit, then peeled off the paper. I coated it all with some glossy mod-podge.

A few things:
–I still got air bubbles! Big boo to that, but you can hardly tell unless you’re right up on it (get off my wall!).
–The orange floral fabric is a little busy, so I’m going to have to outline the silhouette a bit to give it more definition. If I could do it again, I’d probably reverse it–iron down the outside of the stencil and paint inside the silhouette.

Do you have any silhouettes of you or family members?

I have a few more projects to share, this week. I can hardly wait! They include an embroidery project, a knitted pillow, and my adventures in gardening. Stay tuned!

p.s. I am an April sponsor for my girl thursday and I am in fabulous company! You should check out THIS POST for coupon codes to some wonderful shops, including goodknits! Don’t forget: in celebration of Spring and friendship, all orders will ship with a little braided friendship bracelet. :)
